Khao Lak Sea Turtle Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that aims to protect and conserve the endangered sea turtles that nest on the beaches of Khao Lak. The sanctuary provides a safe and natural environment for the turtles to lay their eggs, hatch and release their offspring into the ocean. The sanctuary also educates the local community and visitors about the importance of sea turtle conservation and the threats they face from poaching, fishing, pollution and climate change. Khao Lak Sea Turtle Sanctuary welcomes volunteers and donors who want to support their mission and make a difference for these amazing creatures.

Khao Lak is also the gateway to several national parks, including the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park and the picturesque Khao Sok National Park. The former boasts hiking trails, lush forests, and mesmerizing waterfalls, while the latter is home to the world's oldest evergreen rainforest.

If you plan on visiting Khao Lak, it is recommended that you spend at least a couple of days exploring the town. The duration of your stay could vary depending on whether you're interested in the nearby islands. Koh Surin is an excellent option for those who love camping and snorkelling, as its serene surroundings offer a perfect escape from touristy crowds. Keep in mind that alcohol is not permitted on the island. The Similan Islands are equally beautiful, but you can only visit on a day tour. The journey to both islands involves a lengthy speedboat ride, so be prepared for a bumpy but memorable ride.

TRANSPORT

Private Transfer - Private transfers can be arranged through your hotel or a travel agency. They are more expensive than buses or minivans, but they offer more comfort and convenience, especially if you're traveling with a group or have a lot of luggage.

Taxi - Taxis are available from Phuket or Krabi airports, but they are generally more expensive than other forms of public transport.

Public transport options to Khao Lak can be limited, but with a bit of planning, you can still find a way to get there that suits your budget and preferences.

Above the Clouds

Car Rental - If you prefer to drive yourself, you can rent a car at Phuket or Krabi airport and drive to Khao Lak. However, it's important to note that driving in Thailand can be challenging due to the country's chaotic traffic, so exercise caution and follow the rules of the road.

There are local buses, also known as fan buses, that run along Highway 4 from Bangkok down to Phuket. However, I wouldn't recommend using them unless you have no other choice, as the fans on these buses may not be enough to keep you cool. You can flag down these buses at any point along the road, although there are some popular spots with bus stop shelters and benches.

You don't need to book tickets in advance for these regular public buses. Just board the bus, let the driver know where you are headed, and take a seat. A staff member will come to collect the fare and issue a ticket. The fare to get to the Phuket bus terminal is approximately 120 THB.

Taxis can be hired from Phuket or Krabi airports to reach Khao Lak, but they tend to be pricier than other public transportation options.

ACCOMMODATION

Khao Lak has a variety of areas to stay in, each with its own unique features and attractions. Here are some popular areas to consider:

Nang Thong Beach - This is the main beach in Khao Lak, with a wide range of accommodation options from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts. It is also close to the town centre, making it a convenient location for dining, shopping, and entertainment.

White Sand Beach - This area is quieter than Bang Niang and Nang Thong, with a few luxury resorts and some budget options. The beach is long and wide, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Khao Lak has something to offer for everyone, whether you're looking for a budget-friendly guesthouse or a luxurious resort. It's important to consider your preferences and priorities when choosing an area to stay in.
